The Congress of Deputies has approved a Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNV) measure calling on the government to restrict or prohibit “direct and indirect” beverage alcohol advertising on broadcast media and social media networks. The EAJ-PNV proposal followed Health Minister Dolors Montserrat’s recent announcement that the government would draft legislation to address underage drinking and implement harmful drinking prevention efforts. Montserrat has called on the Senate Committee for the Study of Drug Problems to hold a meeting with key stakeholders and representatives from sectors that would be affected by this legislation, in order to hold a comprehensive debate on the issue. Health officials will also collaborate with private stakeholders and public departments over the course of six months to draft a report on national underage drinking rates.
